The Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri now has a 75-metre-wide heritage corridor, Shree Mandir Parikrama Prakalpa (SMPP) which includes a green buffer zone, a welcome space that can accommodate 6,000 worshippers, the Jagannath Ballav pilgrim centre, multi-level parking and a designated path for pedestrians, among other facilities. It cost `8 billion of which Rs.5 billion was spent on rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) of residents and vendors who were displaced by the project and `3 billion on construction of the corridor.Project work began in 2019 and involved building a corridor around the 12th Century temple. The area around the temple was initially congested with commercial and residential buildings. The narrow lanes and by-lanes presented a security hazard apart from causing hardship to pilgrims while moving around the temple. The temple precincts after the Parikrama construction now present a very different look with wide open spaces all around the temple.
