India Transforms Coal and Minerals With Green Growth Drive

Union Minister of Coal & Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s coal and mineral sectors are undergoing a historic transformation, balancing the nation’s rising energy needs with ambitious sustainability goals.
Speaking at the Energy Leadership Summit organised by the Economic Times, the Minister noted that coal production and dispatch exceeded 1 billion tonnes in 2024–25, with demand projected to reach 1.6 billion tonnes by 2030. “To meet this rising demand sustainably, we are turning coal into a driver of green growth. The Coal Gasification Mission aims to achieve 100 million tonnes by 2030, supported by an Rs 8.5 billion incentive scheme, with seven projects already underway,” he said. Coal PSUs are diversifying into renewables, having added 1,900 MW of solar and wind capacity, with a target of 15 GW by 2030. Neyveli Lignite Corporation alone is contributing 10.11 GW.
On the environmental front, Reddy highlighted that over 57,000 hectares of mined land have been reclaimed, with an additional 16,000 hectares targeted under Mission GREEN Coal Regions by 2030.
Regarding mining reforms, the Minister said 542 mineral blocks have been auctioned, including 34 critical minerals. “For the first time, private and junior exploration agencies have been involved. Drone surveys, AI-driven modelling, and remote sensing are fast-tracking exploration, and 13 exploration licences have been awarded, marking a new era for mining,” he added.
Reddy emphasised India’s global presence, noting that through the National Critical Minerals Mission, strategic stockpiles are being built and overseas assets secured. KABIL has acquired lithium blocks in Argentina, while nodal officers abroad are strengthening mineral diplomacy. An Rs 1.5 billion incentive scheme for recycling critical minerals, alongside new Centres of Excellence, will further boost domestic research and capabilities.
Concluding, the Minister reaffirmed that Prime Minister Modi has set a vision for a Viksit Bharat by 2047—an India that is developed, prosperous, and self-reliant.
