Top Projects - Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh is the 10th largest state in India. With Raipur as its capital, the state covers a geographical area of 135,191 sq km. Some of the core cities in the region are Bhilai, Durg, Bilaspur, Korba and Rajnandgaon.

The state offers an average Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of 16.1 per cent and per capita GSDP of $1,031.9. It is blessed with many advantages over other states of the country such as being rich in mineral resources. Chhattisgarh has huge deposits of limestone, iron-ore, bauxite, copper, dolomite and coal and holds 16.0 per cent of the nation's coal reserves. It has also laid out a well drafted industrial policy which offers various fiscal and policy initiatives for the IT/ITeS, minerals and energy sectors. In the year 2011-12, the investments in the state were to the tune of $377.0 billion out of which the electricity sector accounted for around 65.4 per cent followed by the manufacturing sector by 27.6 per cent.

Power

The state has a total power generation installed capacity of 5,624.61 MW. The district of Korba is known as the 'Power Capital' of India. Due to the abundant coal reserves present in the state, Chhattisgarh offers numerous opportunities for the generation of electricity. As part of its Twelfth Five-Year Plan, the state has plans to develop 30,000 MW of capacity. GMR Energy has signed a project implementation programme for implementation, operation and maintenance of a 1,370 MW coal-based thermal power plant with the Chhattisgarh Government. International players like KSK Power Venture Plc are expected to invest $3.5 billion to install a 3,600 MW thermal plant in the state.

Infrastructure

Roadways: Chhattisgarh is well connected by all weather roads and comprises 12 national highways. These highways constitute 2,289 km of roads in the region while the state highways account for 5,240 km.

Railways: The state has a strong railway network and falls under the jurisdiction of the South East Central Railways. The two major railway stations are Raipur and Bilaspur. Chhattisgarh records the highest freight loading capacity in India and around one-sixth of the revenue of Indian Railways comes from this state. The state government also plans to construct about 300 km of rail network in the region. To take this initiative ahead, the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with South Eastern Coalfields and IRCON International. The project is expected to have two rail corridors - East Corridor and the East-West Corridor.

Airports: Chhattisgarh has two domestic airports and eight air strips in Bhilai, Bilaspur, Korba, Raigarh, Jagdalpur, Ambikapur, Jashpur Nagar and Sarangarh. As part of its future plans, the Airport Authority of India has plans to build two new airports at Raigarh and Bilaspur in the state.

Real estate

A new emerging city called 'Naya Raipur' is being developed over 8,000 hectare in the state. City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra has been selected as the advisor for this project, which will include a transport hub and a water supply assignment to meet the requirements of approximately 2.5 million by 2031. Chhattisgarh also has plans to set up a five-star hotel with a large convention centre in Naya Raipur. The Chhattisgarh Industrial Development Corporation has established four industrial growth centres, five industrial parks and three integrated infrastructure development centres. The state also has a notified Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Rajnandgaon District and will soon witness a significant presence of SEZs and industrial parks in the region. Chhattisgarh based-Sandeep Chandrakar, Director, Sarthak Promoters & Builders, says, "The real estate segment is growing dramatically in the state. Cities such as Bhilai, Durg and Korba are popular for residential developments."
