Bondada Engineering Bags LOI for 120 MWh Battery Storage Project

Bondada Engineering has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Gujarat Industries Power Company (GIPCL) to develop a 20 MW/120 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) in Vadodara, Gujarat. The project will be located at GIPCL’s 165 MW natural gas power plant complex and includes a 10-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract.

The Hyderabad-based engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company said the project would support its expansion into advanced energy storage technologies. It described the installation as India’s largest grid-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System, positioning the project within the country’s growing battery energy storage market.

Bondada Engineering’s scope covers the engineering, procurement and construction of the 120 MWh VRFB-based system. It will also provide operations and maintenance services for 10 years. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months of the receipt of the Notice of Award (NOA).

The company’s chairman and managing director, Dr Bondada Raghavendra Rao, said the project represented an important step in its expansion into advanced energy storage solutions. He noted that the increasing deployment of renewable energy in India would raise the importance of storage systems in maintaining reliable and efficient power supply.

Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology is being considered for long-duration energy storage because it can store and discharge electricity over extended periods. The technology uses liquid electrolytes and is suited to applications requiring repeated charging and discharge cycles. The Government of India has set a target of deploying approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030, indicating the scale of infrastructure required to support the country’s energy transition. Bondada Engineering’s project adds to the development of grid-scale storage capacity in Gujarat and broadens the company’s role beyond conventional EPC activities.
