India Soon To Be Third Largest Wind Energy Player

A government official said India is soon to become the third largest wind energy player in the world, reflecting rapid growth in the sector. The official credited sustained policy support, competitive auctions and expanding domestic manufacturing for driving capacity additions across states. Analysts noted that increased grid integration and investment in transmission have reduced curtailment and improved project viability. The official said continued focus on technology and project quality would underpin further nationwide expansion efforts.

State governments were reported to have complemented central initiatives by streamlining clearances and facilitating land acquisition, which the official said shortened project timelines. Developers increased focus on hybrid schemes and repowering older sites to improve capacity utilisation and lower levelised costs, while original equipment manufacturers ramped up local blade and tower production. The official highlighted that financing arrangements have become more structured, enabling longer tenures and attracting institutional investors into renewable infrastructure and job creation.

Investment in grid upgrades was progressing alongside generation additions, the official said, improving the ability to integrate variable wind output into the power system. Research and pilot projects on turbine efficiency and site assessment tools were yielding higher capacity factors in several regions, which industry stakeholders welcomed as reducing risk for future bidders. The official advised that continued coordination between ministries and regulators would be essential to maintain momentum and meet national clean energy goals.

Looking ahead, the official underlined that policy certainty and consistent procurement schedules would be central to sustaining investor confidence and accelerating pipelines. The growth trajectory was expected to stimulate ancillary industries, create skilled employment and foster manufacturing clusters that support supply chains. Stakeholders were urged to maintain high standards in project delivery and environmental safeguards, and the official expressed confidence that coordinated action would enable India to consolidate its position in global renewables and exports.
