India’s Wind Sector Targets 8 GW Capacity Addition in FY27

India’s wind energy sector is targeting 8 GW of annual capacity additions in FY27, with installations projected to reach 13.2 GW by FY31. The industry is also seeking lower manufacturing costs and stronger domestic research infrastructure to improve its competitiveness in global markets.

The outlook was discussed at Windergy India 2026, the annual event of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), being held in Chennai from October 7 to 9. India currently has 59.2 GW of installed wind capacity and another 43 GW under implementation, providing a project pipeline of more than 100 GW.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said the sector recorded its highest annual installation of 6.05 GW in FY26. He said the combination of a strong project pipeline and supportive policy measures would help the industry build on this momentum and achieve the scale required for the next phase of growth.

IWTMA chairman Girish Tanti said India’s annual wind manufacturing capacity had increased to more than 24 GW, from about 12 GW in FY23. Wind equipment exports reached Rs. 128 bn in FY26, nearly 50 per cent higher than in the previous year.

The industry said higher production volumes alone would not be sufficient to establish India as a global manufacturing hub. IWTMA CEO Aditya Pyasi said Indian-made turbines were 10 to 20 per cent more expensive than Chinese products, while raising annual deployment from about 6 GW to 10 to 12 GW could reduce the gap by 8 to 10 per cent.

The sector is seeking manufacturing incentives, supply-chain reforms and improved testing and certification facilities. India lacks sufficient common facilities for testing turbine blades, gearboxes, sensors and other components, requiring manufacturers to send them overseas and adding months and millions of dollars to development. The expansion is also being supported by the Rs. 1.86 tn Green Energy Corridor Phase III, which aims to strengthen transmission infrastructure.
