Jakson Solar Plans Rs. 50 bn Manufacturing Expansion

Jakson Solar plans to invest up to Rs. 50 bn to establish 3 GW each of solar cell and solar ingot-wafer manufacturing capacity in India. The proposed expansion is intended to increase domestic production and strengthen the country’s solar supply chain.

The company aims to commission its 3 GW solar cell manufacturing facility by December 2027. It also plans to establish 3 GW of solar ingot and wafer manufacturing capacity by Q3 of FY28. The new facilities are expected to serve primarily the merchant market, while equipment procurement tie-ups have already been secured to support the expansion.

Jakson Solar currently operates a 1.2 GW solar module manufacturing plant. The proposed investment would extend its presence across several stages of the solar manufacturing value chain, covering modules, cells, ingots and wafers. The company’s plans come as India seeks to expand local production and reduce its dependence on imported components.

Domestic manufacturing is also linked to India’s longer-term climate objectives, including its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The government has introduced domestic sourcing requirements for solar modules and cells to encourage local production and improve resilience against international supply disruptions.

The government has established a framework to extend domestic content requirements to solar ingots and wafers from June 1, 2028. The policy is designed to deepen upstream manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imports, particularly from China. Jakson Solar’s proposed facilities could contribute to that objective by adding local capacity in cells, ingots and wafers, while supporting the broader development of India’s renewable energy manufacturing ecosystem.
