Tehri PSP’s 250 MW Third Unit Starts Commercial Operations

THDC India Limited has commenced the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the 3rd unit of the 1000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant, a 250 MW unit that strengthens its position as the largest variable-speed PSP operated by a Central Public Sector Enterprise. Power Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated the COD virtually from New Delhi, emphasising the plant’s importance in supporting reliable power supply, grid stability and India’s clean-energy transition.

The Minister noted that the Tehri installation is India’s first variable-speed pumped storage facility, reinforcing national ambitions for a Viksit Bharat by 2047 and helping balance the rising share of renewable energy in the grid. Variable-speed technology offers improved flexibility and operational efficiency, making it a key asset for future energy-system management.

Minister of State for Power, Shripad Y Naik, highlighted THDC’s growing leadership in pumped-storage development and its contribution to national energy security. Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal also commended THDC for successfully delivering multiple major projects during the year.

The Tehri PSP sets a benchmark in advanced hydropower with its enhanced round-trip efficiency and modern operational systems. Senior officials, including CEA Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad, NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh and THDCIL CMD Sipan Kumar Garg, were present during the event, reaffirming the project’s strategic relevance to India’s clean-energy roadmap.
