Telangana Peak Power Demand Hits Record 20,003 MW

Telangana’s peak electricity demand reached an all-time high of 20,003 MW on October 15, surpassing the previous financial year’s record of 18,548 MW by 1,455 MW. The State’s daily electricity consumption also climbed to 334.54 mn units (MU) on Thursday. Between October 1 and 15, average peak demand stood at 19,289 MW, while average daily consumption was 321.34 MU.

The increase has been driven by agricultural, domestic, commercial, information technology and industrial requirements, placing additional pressure on power utilities to maintain uninterrupted supply. Utilities are procuring additional power and monitoring supply conditions as demand rises across the State.

In the jurisdiction of the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company (TGSPDCL), peak demand reached 12,281 MW on October 15 and daily consumption stood at 228.14 MU. Demand in the distribution area rose to 12,532 MW at 12.01 on Friday, according to officials.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area recorded peak demand of 4,220 MW at 6.19 pm on October 15. Daily consumption in the area reached 88.22 MU on October 9, compared with peak demand of 3,552 MW in October 2025. Higher domestic and commercial usage, information technology operations, industrial activity and increased use of cooling appliances amid hot and humid weather contributed to the increase.

TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Jitesh V. Patil said the power supply was being managed to meet the requirements of agricultural, domestic, commercial, information technology and industrial consumers. He attributed the rise in agricultural consumption partly to greater dependence on borewells and water-pumping motors amid declining groundwater levels, while stating that utilities were working to augment generation capacity.

Officials are inspecting supply conditions, groundwater levels, borewell availability, irrigation motor operations and crop conditions in rural areas. They have been directed to address interruptions, faulty agricultural motors, damaged service wires and transformer failures promptly, remain accessible to farmers and prioritise agricultural supply complaints. Patil also urged consumers to avoid wastage, conserve water and use energy-efficient practices, including switching off appliances when not in use.
