India’s state-run refiners will commission the world’s longest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) pipeline by June, aiming to cut fuel transport costs and reduce road mishaps. The Rs 108 billion project, led by Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum under IHB Ltd, will run 2,800 km from Kandla to Gorakhpur. The first phase will be ready by March, with full operations by midyear. The pipeline will transport 8.3 million tonne of LPG annually, covering 25 per cent of India’s demand. It will replace trucks, which still deliver 70 per cent of LPG to bottling plants, reducing accident risks.India’s LPG consumption has surged 80 per cent in a decade to 29.6 million tonne in FY24, driven by government subsidies promoting cleaner cooking fuel. The project faced delays since 2019 due to pandemic disruptions and material shortages linked to the Russia-Ukraine war. India currently has nearly 5,000 km of LPG pipelines.
