AMC to build 10,000 affordable homes

In Gujarat, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is also to launch affordable housing units in the city. The civic body will launch 10,000 units for lower income group and economically weaker section of the society. Already Gandhinagar Urban Development Authority, Gujarat Housing Board and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority have got into building affordable homes to the poor.

The AMC has set the price limit for EWS houses at Rs 3.5 lakh while for LIG houses, it will be Rs 7 lakh. In the first phase, AMC will build 7,000 houses for LIG and 3,000 for EWS on self-finance model. Under this model, the government provides subsidy of Rs 1.5 lakh, while the rest of the cost is borne by the beneficiary.

Bhupendra Patel, Chairman of AMC’s standing committee said that the houses will be built within one-and-a-half years. The government has given the task of setting up 50,000 such houses in five years. The civic body has fixed annual income of Rs1 lakh for beneficiaries of EWS category and Rs 2.5 lakh for LIG category beneficiaries.
