Pune Airport all set to start expansion

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is working on the expansion of the existing Pune International Airport to cater to the growing rush of air traffic in the city. The expansion project is estimated at Rs 650 crore, which will bring in a new terminal building, solar power system, new check in counters and boarding gates, new road connectivity and improved passenger amenities. The Pune Airport will reportedly also soon start trans-shipment facility for cargo as part of the expansion plan. The airport is being revamped and expanded to handle the passenger growth and the cargo handling capacity. A 42,000 sq mt terminal building has reportedly been cleared and work will begin this year.

The proposed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje International Airport at Purandar in Pune is yet to clear regulatory hurdles. The proposed Purandar Airport is awaiting clearance from the Ministry of Defence for nearly a year. With the new airport to be coming up only by 2022-23, there is a growing demand for expansion of the existing airport. Some of the expansion plans of the existing Pune Airport also hinges on acquisition of land from the IAF airbase as well as some private land owners. The AAI and Defence Department has reportedly signed an agreement under which the Maharashtra Government has to hand over land in return for the defence land. The Maharashtra Airport Development Corporation (MADC) is developing the Purandar Airport and is waiting for the regulatory clearances to start the project.
