Mumbai's 26 builders yet to hand over tenements' share to govt

In Mumbai city, as many as 26 builders who have redeveloped old buildings are yet to hand over the State government's share of tenements and have ignored notices sent to them by the State government urging them to do so and pay the penalty for delay.

In October last year, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) had dispatched notices to 33 builders who were to hand over 3,300 tenements — about 14,000 sq m in area — after redeveloping cessed buildings to add to its affordable housing stock.

The cumulative penalty to be collected from the developers for the delay amounts to Rs 31.41 crore, of which MHADA has been able to collect just Rs 5.21 crore so far. The notices were sent to those to whom MHADA had given No-Objection Certificates to redevelop cessed buildings between 1991 and 2003. Several developers yet to comply with the notices.
