Jagdish K Valecha, Managing Director, Valecha Engineering Ltd

With a group turnover of Rs 30,000 million, Valecha Engineering has positioned itself as a globally accepted construction and infrastructure development company. The company, listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), has created some of the most prominent civil engineering infrastructure landmarks of India. Jagdish Valecha, Managing Director, tells Shubhangi Bidwe about these projects and the strengths and strategies of the company...

Valecha Engineering started as a small firm engaged in road projects for the BMC. Highlight the company's milestones from inception till date.
The journey began in 1957 when Valecha Brothers formed a partnership firm named 'Gopaldas Vasudev & Co' that later graduated into a private limited company in the year 1977. In 1993, Valecha Brothers (EC) Pvt Ltd changed its status from a private limited to a public limited company and, came to be known as 'Valecha Engineering Ltd' (VEL). In 1994, VEL went public and was listed on OTC Exchange of India followed by the BSE and NSE. It is today a mammoth enterprise having a turnover of over Rs 650 crore and an order book position of over Rs 2,100 crore.

The company has been awarded four BOT road projects worth over Rs 1,300 crore during the last 12 months and bids for over Rs 1,000 crore worth of projects every month. VEL has also ventured into the power sector and further plans to foray into the renewable and the non-renewable sectors. It has recently signed an MoU with the Government of Madhya Pradesh for a 2 x 440 MW, Rs 2,200 crore thermal power project to be set up in the state. Its corporate strategy is to create a new portfolio of businesses while growing its existing EPC business.

About the company foraying into the power sector with a 440 MW project in Madhya Pradesh, highlight the main vision behind this and the annual capacity of power that you target to generate?
The power sector is one of the largest growing sectors of India. The government has targetted a capacity addition of 78,000 MW by the year 2012. It has, over the years, undertaken a number of initiatives such as delicensing of thermal power generation, restructuring of SEBs, proper market for power, setting up of power exchanges amongst other initiatives. VEL aims to avail of these opportunities by tapping this growing market.

Valecha has been involved in some major piling contracts. Which are the latest piling projects undertaken by the company both in India and overseas?
Foundation engineering, particularly in India, has aligned with international technology of rotary rigs. Valecha acquired its first automated piling rig in 1997 and also won its first piling contract in the same year. Today, the company is regarded as one of the dominant players
in the field and has one of the largest fleet of Hydraulic Rotary Rigs in the country. In the year 2006, we also ventured into the Middle East market with large piling contracts.

Some of the not-able piling projects executed by the com-pany include:
  • Diaphragm walling for DMRC and DTTDC in New Delhi;
