Maharashtra plans 7.3 lakh PMAY houses by Dec 2024

The state housing department announced that they had set a goal of constructing 7.27 lakh affordable houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana by December 2024, which was the revised deadline set by the Centre.

According to a senior official from the department, a significant portion of the houses were planned for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) areas, as well as in the Nagpur and Aurangabad regions. He stated that Mumbai would have more than 1 lakh units, followed by 50,000 to 60,000 houses in the Pune, Nagpur, and Aurangabad regions.

The official further mentioned that the Centre had revised the state's target to construct 7.27 lakh affordable housing units by the following year's December, out of which 60% (4 lakh) were already in various stages of construction. The state's initial target, established in 2015, had been to construct 15.82 lakh units by 2022.

The target had been revised due to the exclusion of slum rehabilitation projects from the scheme, and the Centre had extended the deadline to 2024 to account for the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Another senior official from the state housing department confirmed the revision of the target. He stated that the state was anticipating around Rs 80 billion from the Centre as a subsidy. The state's contribution would be Rs 50 billion. As per the official, the Centre had already granted Rs 20 billion and the state had approved Rs 30 billion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, laid the foundation stone for over 6,400 affordable housing units in the PMRDA region. Additionally, slightly more than 1,000 units were inaugurated for the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad civic areas. PMRDA was planning to construct approximately 6,452 units in the Moshi area by 2025 under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

The state housing department stated that Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and banks would assist beneficiaries through the Maharashtra Housing Corporation in obtaining houses. The official mentioned that the appointed NGOs would facilitate reaching out to beneficiaries, while negotiations with banks were ongoing for providing loans.
