MeitY Selects Sarvam AI to Build India’s First Sovereign LLM

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), led by Ashwini Vaishnaw, has selected Sarvam AI to build India's first sovereign large language model (LLM) under the IndiaAI Mission.

Sarvam AI, a Bengaluru-based startup, will develop a foundation model designed for advanced reasoning, Indian language fluency and speech capabilities. The startup will receive four thousand eighty-six H100 GPUs for six months to create the indigenous model from scratch.

The sovereign LLM initiative will feature three variants: Sarvam-Large for advanced reasoning and generation, Sarvam-Small for real-time applications, and Sarvam-Edge for compact on-device use. Sarvam AI is collaborating with AI4Bharat at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, a leader in Indian language artificial intelligence research, to build these models.

Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed confidence that Sarvam’s models would compete globally. Dr. Pratyush Kumar, Co-founder of Sarvam AI, highlighted the depth and expertise of the team driving the project.

The move follows India's ambition to establish leadership in artificial intelligence development, especially after China's DeepSeek AI gained global prominence earlier in 2025.
