CM Yogi Adityanath expands Matrubhoomi Yojana to cities

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the Matrubhoomi Yojana on Friday, extending the scheme beyond rural areas to include cities as well.

The primary objective of this initiative is to enable individuals living in urban areas or abroad to reconnect with their ancestral villages and contribute funds for infrastructure development projects, should they wish to do so.

"We have currently implemented this scheme in rural areas, and we will now introduce the Matrubhoomi scheme in urban areas as well," stated the Chief Minister.

He further emphasised the dual purpose of the initiative, stating, "This programme will serve two important objectives: firstly, it will allow individuals to reconnect with their roots, and secondly, it will enable them to contribute to the development of their motherland."

The Chief Minister added, "The bond between a person and their motherland is invaluable. There can be no comparison. Therefore, we must provide every individual with the opportunity to participate in the Matrubhoomi Yojana."

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved the implementation of the Matrubhoomi Yojana in November 2021 to facilitate individuals and private institutions in contributing to the development of any village.

According to officials, many individuals with rural backgrounds who now reside in cities or abroad express a desire to contribute to the progress of their villages. However, they needed a structured platform to do so. Under the scheme, if an individual or private institution wishes to contribute to the development of a village panchayat and is willing to bear 60% of the cost, the state government will arrange the remaining 40% of the funds and provide the necessary land, as stated in an official press release.

"Every person shares a special bond with their motherland. We must encourage and nurture this bond. Previously, people had concerns about the misappropriation of funds in the state government's budget," said the Chief Minister. He reassured that every contribution made will be meticulously accounted for.

"The Department of Panchayati Raj should establish a mechanism that allows the contributors to track the utilization of every penny they contribute," he added.
