India Core Infrastructure Output Rises To Five Month High

India's core infrastructure output rose to a five month high in June as production in several key sectors increased. Official data released on Monday showed growth of five per cent in June, up from three point two per cent in May and one point one per cent in June 2025. The index has been rebased to 2022-23 and now comprises nine core sectors after the inclusion of iron ore. Analysts noted the methodological change affected comparability but the monthly trajectory indicates strengthening activity.

Cement and electricity each recorded nine point eight per cent growth in June, while iron ore, newly added to the series, expanded by 43.9 per cent. The release noted declines in crude oil production, natural gas, refinery products and fertiliser during the month. The government replacement of the earlier 2011-12 base with 2022-23 has increased the number of sectors and altered the weighting across the index. Monthly figures reflect both output changes and the statistical impact of the new base.

For the April to June 2026-27 quarter the nine sectors grew by three point six per cent compared with one per cent in the same period last year. The quarterly improvement was supported by stronger construction related inputs and power generation even as hydrocarbons and fertiliser output fell. Iron ore contribution was particularly notable given its first appearance in the series and the magnitude of its jump. The data will be used by policymakers and market participants to assess near term industrial momentum.

The updated series aims to provide a more current picture of the infrastructure complex by reflecting recent compositional shifts and activity patterns. Observers will monitor subsequent months to see whether the June rise represents the start of a sustained recovery or a short term rebound influenced by seasonal and base effects. The statistics office will publish further detail in its full release and stakeholders will parse the sectoral breakdown for policy implications.
