The 18th edition of Aakaar, the annual civil engineering festival hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, concluded on 15 March 2026, reaffirming its position as Asia’s largest platform for civil engineering innovation and collaboration. The event brought together students, researchers and industry professionals, offering a robust mix of technical competitions, research forums, keynote sessions and industry showcases.A key highlight was the 10th International Civil Engineering Symposium (ICES), which formed the intellectual core of the festival. Through paper presentations, poster sessions and the ‘Thesis 180’ format, the symposium enabled young researchers to present their work before leading academicians and industry experts. The combined prize pool for ICES events exceeded Rs 95,000, reflecting the scale and competitiveness of participation.Among the most engaging sessions was the Author Talk by Pratap Padode, Managing Director, ASAPP Info Global Group, and Chief Editor. Drawing from his book Tarmac to Towers: India’s Infrastructure Story, he shared insights on the evolution of India’s infrastructure landscape and highlighted emerging opportunities for civil engineering professionals, adding a strong knowledge-led dimension to the programme.Aakaar 2026 also featured four major technical competitions—Industrial Design Project (IDP), BridgeIT, ConquerIT and Crackathon—with a combined prize pool exceeding Rs 1,25,000. These competitions required participants to address real-world engineering challenges, ranging from structural efficiency and sustainable materials to AI-driven road defect detection.Industry participation remained a defining element, with companies such as JSW Cement, HCC and Sika showcasing technologies and solutions. The laboratory tours, including the Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics Laboratory and the SUDARSHAN National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility, offered attendees exposure to advanced research infrastructure. The festival concluded with a panel discussion featuring senior leaders from construction, real estate and infrastructure finance, providing insights into sector trends and future outlook.Overall, Aakaar 2026 underscored the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in shaping the future of civil engineering.
