Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s first 3nm semiconductor chip design centres in Noida and Bengaluru on May 13, marking a significant leap in India’s semiconductor ambitions. Operated by Renesas Electronics India, these state-of-the-art facilities position India among the world’s elite in chip design. “This is next-generation technology. While we have designed 7nm and 5nm chips before, 3nm is a new frontier,” said the Minister, highlighting India’s rapid progress in semiconductor R&D. The initiative aligns with India’s broader semiconductor strategy covering chip design, fabrication, ATMP, and supply chains. Vaishnaw emphasised rising global interest, citing investments by Applied Materials and Lam Research, and praised CDAC and the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) for enabling swift progress. To boost talent development, a new semiconductor learning kit will be distributed to over 270 academic institutions already using advanced EDA tools. The government also reaffirmed its support for initiatives like Chips to Startup (C2S) and the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme. Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata called India a “strategic cornerstone” for the company, citing strong Indo-Japan collaboration and India’s deep talent pool.
