Kohima Ward 19 Launches W19 App for Civic Services

Ward 19 in Kohima has launched the W19 mobile application to improve communication with residents, support sanitation management and promote local businesses. The initiative was launched at Central Plaza, Multi-Level Car Parking, on October 15 by Medoviu Martin Suohu, Ward 19 Councillor, Kohima Municipal Council (KMC).

Deputy Commissioner of Kohima B Henok Buchem said the application could strengthen communication between residents and ward functionaries, facilitate local issue reporting and improve access to information. He also stressed that its success would depend on how effectively it addressed everyday concerns, while urging residents to segregate wet and dry waste, avoid littering and take greater responsibility for cleanliness.

The app was developed with voluntary support from developers in the ward and without a dedicated budget or government funding. It is intended to provide an alternative to the existing WhatsApp group, which has around 3,500 members and cannot accommodate all residents in a single group. Youth organisations from the ward’s five colonies have been asked to help senior citizens and other residents learn to use the platform.

Planned features include a grievance portal, ward information, development updates, emergency contacts and notifications on garbage collection schedules. Future versions are expected to include a local business directory, live GPS tracking of sanitation vehicles and online collection of sanitation fees. Discussions are also being pursued on linking residents with information about government welfare schemes through official websites.

Suohu said the model could eventually be replicated across all 19 wards if it proves effective. Ward 19 also plans to establish a cemetery in December, subject to the required clearances, while youth groups are working on scholarships for students and education-related assistance. The councillor additionally donated a laptop, printer and 10 walkie-talkie units to the Ward Council. Buchem said KMC and citizens must work together on waste management, including responsible pet ownership and preventing dogs from roaming freely.
