Rs 111.5 billion budget presented by BBMP to decongest Bengaluru

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) presented its budget worth Rs. 111.5 billion for the year 2023-2024, with an emphasis on decongesting the city. At Bengaluru's Town Hall, BBMP's Special Commissioner (Finance) Jayaram Raipura gave a presentation of the yearly budget. This is the third time the municipal organisation has done so without a city council. It is interesting to note that various public infrastructure projects received 63% of the budget, accounting for the majority of the funds, while solid waste management only received 14.73%.

As earlier declared by the Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, the civic authority has proposed building new flyovers and underpasses to address traffic problems. On land provided by IISc, flyovers are anticipated to be built at the Gokula Road vicinity of the Mathikere turn, the Outer Ring Road to the Pipeline Junction at Jalahalli, the Mekhri Circle underpass on Jayamahal Road, and the Sadashivanagar Police Station Circle. These new projects have received a total of Rs 2.10 billion of funding.

A further 150 km of road will be white-topped this year at a cost of Rs 14.10 billion. The government has designated 75 traffic junctions for development in an effort to speed up slow traffic. In addition, roadways with a width of less than 60 feet have heavy arterial traffic. A further amount of Rs 1,500 million will be set aside for enlarging these highways to maintain a constant road width in order to relieve the congestion on them.

Nine active infrastructure projects have received a grant totaling Rs. 1.95 billion. This funding will be used for projects on the Tumkur Road to Nayandanahalli Junction, West of Chord Road to Kurubarahalli, RR Nagar to Magadi Road, Wilson Garden, Yelahanka, Hoodi junction, Minerva Junction, and Old Madras Road.

According to the BBMP, Bengaluru City now has 42 flyovers and 28 under bridges, and this year, further four flyovers and four under bridges will be built. For the upkeep of these flyovers, under bridges, and pedestrian subways, Rs 200 million has been set aside. An additional Rs 200 million has been set aside for the upkeep of arterial and sub-arterial roads, as well as roads built under the Tender Sure and Smart City Schemes.
