ABB India Expands Local Production with New Line for Energy-Efficient Drives

ABB India has announced the expansion of its local manufacturing footprint with the launch of a new production line for variable speed drive (VSD) modules at its Peenya facility in Bengaluru. The new line enhances ABB’s local production capacity for drives by around 25 per cent, supporting the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.

Equipped with state-of-the-art automation and digital monitoring technologies, the new line is designed to meet the rising demand for energy-efficient and high-performance drives across industries such as buildings, data centres, water, cement, and metals. By localizing production, ABB expects to reduce delivery lead times by up to 40 per cent and provide ‘made-to-order’ drive solutions for diverse industrial requirements.

“As we celebrate two decades of drive production in India, this expansion reinforces our commitment to advancing local manufacturing and delivering energy-efficient technologies for Indian industries,” said AR Madhusudan, Business Line Manager, Drive Products, ABB India. “Our upgraded drives factory will serve customers with greater reliability, agility, and precision through advanced automation and localization.”

The new, ergonomically designed line integrates robotics for key component assembly and features sensor-based tools aligned with Industry 4.0 standards to ensure consistent quality and efficiency. Real-time digital monitoring enhances visibility across operations, while automated movement of assembled drives improves safety and production speed.

“As India accelerates its sustainability goals, ABB drives are enabling industries to enhance energy efficiency and performance,” said Tuomo Hoysniemi, Division President, Drive Products, ABB Motion. “This expansion strengthens our local ecosystem and brings us closer to customers—helping them achieve leaner, cleaner, and more sustainable operations.”

The expansion coincides with ABB’s 50th anniversary of global innovation in variable speed drives and 20 years of drive production excellence in India. ABB drives are widely used to optimize motor performance and energy consumption across critical sectors — from metros and airports to pharmaceuticals and metals — contributing to India’s industrial growth and sustainability journey.
