Swan Defence Secures Landmark Chemical Tanker Order

Swan Defence and Heavy Industries has signed its first newbuild contract for six IMO Type II chemical tankers, each with a deadweight tonnage of 18,000 DWT, to be built at its revitalised shipyard in Pipavav, Gujarat.

Valued at USD 227 million, the contract from European shipowner Rederiet Stenersen AS is among the largest single commercial shipbuilding orders placed with an Indian shipyard. It is also the first and largest chemical tanker order awarded to an Indian yard, underscoring Swan Defence’s growing capability to deliver complex, world-class commercial vessels.

The agreement includes an option for six additional sister vessels, which could significantly expand the overall order size. The first tanker is scheduled for delivery within 33 months, with subsequent vessels to be delivered at regular intervals. Each tanker will measure around 150 metres in length and approximately 23 metres in beam, in line with global standards for modern chemical tankers.

The vessels will be designed by Marinform AS in collaboration with StoGda Ship Design & Engineering and classified by DNV. Built to Ice Class 1A standards, the tankers will feature advanced dual-fuel LNG-ready hybrid propulsion systems, enabling multiple operational modes supported by high levels of automation. The project reflects rising global demand for environmentally efficient shipping solutions and strengthens India’s position in high-value commercial shipbuilding.
