Sanchi is now India's first 'solar city'. This solar project, by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by a staggering 14,324 tonnes annually, promises to make a substantial environmental impact. Currently, a fully-operational 3 MW solar plant, on a five hectare land close to the UNESCO World Heritage site, caters to the city's energy needs. Simultaneously, a 5 MW plant dedicated to fulfilling agricultural requirements is under construction. Once completed, the city is poised to generate surplus energy compared to its consumption. The state is also constructing a 600 MW electricityproducing solar plant on the dam water in Omkareshwar. The solar city project feeds surplus energy into the grid and aims to generate energy equivalent to the total town’s consumption.
