AAI set to get land for two airport expansion projects

According to media reports, the Tamil Nadu government is set to handover land for the expansion of Madurai and Tuticorin airports to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

For the Madurai airport project, the state government is set to issue acquisition notification, while for the Tuticorin project, the process of issuing acquisition notification would be completed soon, reports indicate.

Tamil Nadu government is expected to handover 615 acre of land as sought by AAI for the Madurai project. Of the total extent, patta land accounted for 433 acre and the state government held a public hearing and issued a preliminary notification for acquiring this land. After this process, it would issue the acquisition notification.

The state government owns the remaining 182 acre of land and it may handover the same to the AAI. In Madurai, the expansion was possible only if the road leading to Aruppukkottai was diverted.

The AAI sought 586 acre land for expansion of the Tuticorin airport. The government has already issued the preliminary notification. The acquisition notification would be issued soon, and compensation paid to the patta holders, before the land is handed over to the AAI.

Meanwhile, the airport authority also asked the state government to provide 633.54 acre land for the expansion of the Coimbatore airport and the government has already called for a public hearing.
