India signs deals with EU in aviation safety, air traffic control

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) signed a memorandum of understanding for aviation safety cooperation. The agreement was signed on the first day of the EU-India Aviation Summit, alongside a declaration of intent signed by the Airport Authority of India with Eurocontrol, a pan-European, civil-military organisation dedicated to supporting European aviation.

While the MoU between DGCA and EASA will focus on regulatory and safety collaboration, the declaration of intent between AAI and Eurocontrol will focus on air traffic control. Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that India and the EU have a long history of cooperation and invited EU industry players to join the world's fastest growing aviation market.

"India and the EU have shared strong historical relations that continue to grow today on the back of robust physical, digital, and people-to-people connectivity, which is aided by the aviation industry," he said. Scindia made these remarks during his two-day summit virtual address.

Adina Vălean, European Union Commissioner for Transport, also spoke at the summit virtually. "Whether it's commercial opportunities, aviation safety and security, sustainability, air traffic management, or consumer protection, our shared experiences and goals make us natural partners." We already have a successful track record of collaboration and partnership in a variety of areas. "I sincerely hope that aviation will be one of our most successful collaborations," she said.

The summit will focus on EU-India air transport relations, as well as the two regions' mutual challenges and opportunities, such as post-Covid recovery of air traffic, increasing sustainability, maintaining safety, and developing unmanned aircraft systems.

The summit will bring together top policymakers, business executives, and stakeholders from the EU and India. "India and the EU have a long history of bilateral relations." "I am confident that we will have a bright future with even stronger cooperation and collaboration between the EU and India," said Andreas Carlson, Sweden's Minister of Infrastructure and Housing.
