Prayagraj Metro DPR Revised, Airport Link Added; State Nod Awaited

A revised detailed project report (DPR) for a conventional metro rail network in Prayagraj has been submitted by RITES, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, to the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC). The project, estimated at Rs. 120 bn, is awaiting approval from the Uttar Pradesh government before it can be sent to the Centre for clearance.

The revised plan contains two corridors. One will run from Shantipuram to Cheoki in Naini, while the other will connect Jhunsi with Prayagraj airport through Bamrauli and the proposed Aero City area. The second corridor was extended to the airport to strengthen links with the city’s air transport gateway.

A proposed interchange at Parade is another feature of the plan. The station is intended to connect the two metro corridors with a ropeway station, creating a multimodal transport hub and allowing passengers to transfer between different modes of public transport.

The project has undergone multiple changes since the first DPR. The initial proposal was for a conventional metro system, but it was later replaced by a MetroLite plan with 39 smaller stations and lighter infrastructure. Following recommendations from UPMRC, RITES carried out a fresh survey last year and prepared the revised conventional metro proposal.

Rishi Raj, vice-chairman of the Prayagraj Development Authority, said the updated DPR incorporates the extension of the Jhunsi-Bamrauli corridor to the airport. The project will require approvals from both the state and Central governments before clearance and funding arrangements can proceed. The revised report now awaits the state government’s decision.
