Tata, Airbus to Build India’s First Private Helicopter Line

In a landmark development for India’s aerospace sector, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus will establish the country’s first private-sector helicopter assembly line in Vemagal, Karnataka. The facility will manufacture the Airbus H125 and H125M, marking a significant milestone in India’s push for self-reliance in aviation and defence manufacturing.

The new Final Assembly Line (FAL) will produce the H125, the world’s best-selling single-engine helicopter, known for its versatility and performance in extreme environments. The first ‘Made in India’ H125 is expected to roll out in early 2027, serving both civil and para-public sectors across India. These helicopters will be used for emergency medical services, disaster relief, law enforcement, tourism, and passenger transport.

A military variant, the H125M, will also be developed at the same facility, featuring a high degree of indigenous technology and components. The H125M is expected to be a strong contender to replace the ageing Cheetah and Chetak fleets used by the Indian Armed Forces, particularly for high-altitude operations in the Himalayas. The helicopters manufactured in Karnataka will also be exported across South Asia, reinforcing India’s position in the regional rotorcraft market.

Karnataka, already home to a growing aerospace ecosystem with global OEMs, defence PSUs, and MSMEs, will further strengthen its reputation as India’s aviation manufacturing hub through this venture. With Vemagal joining Bengaluru and other clusters, the state continues to lead in aerospace innovation and industrial capability.

Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Advanced Systems, said, “TASL is proud to be the first private company in India to build helicopters. This project will support both civil and defence sectors and strengthen our long-standing partnership with Airbus. With our expanding aerospace expertise, TASL is well-positioned to manufacture both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters for India.”

Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director of Airbus India & South Asia, added, “India is an ideal helicopter country. A ‘Made in India’ helicopter will help develop new markets and establish rotorcraft as essential tools for national development. We are delighted to deepen our partnership with Tata through this new initiative.”

This will be Airbus’s second final assembly line in India in collaboration with Tata, following the C295 military aircraft facility in Vadodara, Gujarat. The move underscores Airbus’s long-term commitment to India’s aerospace ecosystem, from which it already sources over Rs 11.6 billion annually in components such as aircraft doors, flap-track beams, and helicopter cabin aerostructures.

Airbus’s association with India spans over six decades, beginning with its partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to produce the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, which continue to serve the Indian armed forces. The H125M is now positioned as the modern successor to these legacy aircraft.

Globally, the H125 has logged over 40 million flight hours and is the only helicopter to have landed on Mount Everest, highlighting its exceptional high-altitude capabilities. The helicopter can be quickly reconfigured for multiple missions, including firefighting, rescue operations, aerial surveys, air ambulance, and passenger transport.

The Tata-Airbus partnership is expected to provide a major boost to India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision in aerospace and defence, while creating jobs, developing technical skills, and strengthening the local supply chain. With this project, Karnataka further cements its position as the aerospace capital of India and a key player in the country’s journey toward global aviation leadership.
