Ancient temple comes in the way of road widening project

In Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district, the planned widening of East Coast Road has become a threat to 600-year-old Sri Sundararaja Perumal temple at Kothankulam in Kadaladi block in the district.

As per the road widening plan, the temple has to be demolished if the existing two-lane road on the east coast has to be widened to a four-lane highway as per the marked alignments. This was the Industrial corridor announced by the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to expedite industrialisation of south Tamil Nadu.

Now a private company was undertaking survey and marking alignments for widening the 110 km long road from Paravur bypass junction in Ramanathapuram to Tuticorin harbour.
