Govt concerned over slow pace of road construction

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Morth) has expressed concern over the slow progress of road construction projects in the northeastern region. The Ministry said the progress of work in the region is almost two times slower than the rest of the country. The Ministry's Secretary Vijay Chhibber said in Guwahati on August 3 that the delay is primarily in the pre-construction period. Delay in land acquisition and forest clearance is somewhat slowing the progress of work in the region.

The Union government has given the northeast one of the ambitious road construction projects under "Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in North East (SARDP-NE) and Arunchal Pradesh package. Under "Phase A" of SARDP-NE and Arunachal Pradesh package alone, Rs 33,688 crore has been earmarked for constructing a road length of 6,418 km in the region. Chibber said for this year, Rs 3,100 crore has been earmarked for constructing 2,000 kilometers of road in the region.

He made it clear that there is no problem of money. Union road transport and highway minister Oscar Fernandes reviewed the progress of road construction work with chief ministers, public works department ministers and bureaucrats here on Friday. Union minister for development of north eastern region (DoNER) Paban Singh Ghatowar was also present at the review meeting.
