The Karnataka Public Works Department has approved the usage of slag, which is a by-product of iron ore smelting by steel plants for the road construction projects. The slag will be first used in the Bellary district where large steel plants are located. This will be the alternative solution for natural sand. Steel plants located in Karnataka are willing to offer the slag free of cost. The material has been allowed to be used for road works but permission is not provided for its usage in building construction.
