Six-lane road to ease Mukarba Chowk traffic

Public Works Department (PWD) of the Delhi Government has envisaged a grandiose plan to decongest Mukarba Chowk in North-West Delhi. It has planned to construct an additional six-lane road on the other side of the supplementary drain from Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar at Mukarba Chowk to Wazirabad along the National Highway-1.

The crossing has been a major headache for Delhi traffic police as it always remained busy and clogged. Being an important intersection, the new connectivity road along the other side of supplementary drain that will connect Trans-Yamuna, ISBT to Singhu Border and Tikri Border is expected to ease vehicular traffic on this stretch. According to PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, the department has invited tender for appointment of consultant by December 22.

As per plan, 9.58-km long new road will be connected with two flyovers that will cross over the drain near Mukarba Chowk and Wazirabad. The flyover will cross drain at Wazirabad to be connected with Signature Bridge.

Besides these two flyovers, there is also plan to construct three Foot-over-Bridges (FoBs) at Mukarba Chowk, Burari and Wazirabad for pedestrians. The total cost of the project is expected to be around Rs 833 crore. According to Chauhan, green belt, cycle track and footpath will also be constructed to make the entire stretch for commuter friendly.
