Ahmedabad Plans Elevated Corridor To Ease Airport Congestion

Authorities in Ahmedabad are evaluating plans to ease traffic congestion at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, where the single entry–exit route has long been a bottleneck for commuters. At a recent high-level meeting, officials from the Airport Authority, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), and other agencies discussed two proposals — constructing new approach roads or developing an elevated corridor, similar to the one near Delhi Airport.
The Airport Circle road, currently used for both arrivals and departures, experiences heavy congestion throughout the day. Under the proposals, one option involves an elevated route from Shahibaug–Sadar Bazaar directly into the airport, while the second explores a corridor linking the airport with Indira Bridge. Both are designed to separate entry and exit traffic for smoother movement and reduced delays.
These discussions come as Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar strengthen their bid to host the 2036 Olympics, prompting infrastructure upgrades around key sites. The Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, spread across 650 acres near the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, is being developed at a cost of Rs 50.5 billion and is expected to be completed by December 2028. Once operational, it is projected to significantly increase traffic around the airport.
Previously, the AMC had proposed a tunnel project under the Army Cantonment’s firing range to connect Airport Circle with the Sabarmati Riverfront, but the plan has been on hold for two years due to pending Army clearance. Officials are now considering reopening the same route with high-security boundary walls instead of pursuing the tunnel alternative.
In parallel, work is progressing under Phase 2 of the Sabarmati Riverfront project, which includes constructing a 24-metre-wide road on the eastern bank to link the riverfront with Airport Circle.
These projects are part of a broader plan by the AMC to enhance urban connectivity and improve traffic flow between the Sabarmati Riverfront, Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, and SVPI Airport, ahead of the city’s push for global events and growing passenger traffic.
