FASTag Annual Pass Improves Toll Plaza Efficiency, NHAI Survey Finds

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has found that the FASTag Annual Pass has improved toll plaza operations, increased vehicle throughput and reduced payment-related complaints. A survey commissioned by NHAI covered 580 toll plazas and assessed the pass across eight operational parameters, recording an average positive response of 91 per cent from operators and other stakeholders.

The findings indicated improvements in operational efficiency and traffic movement, along with lower workloads for toll operators. The pass also reduced the need for on-lane FASTag recharges, while helping address exemption-related disputes and other payment concerns at toll plazas.

According to the survey, throughput improved by 94 per cent after the Annual Pass was introduced, while payment-related complaints declined by 89 per cent. Exemption-related disputes and incidents of violence fell by more than 84 per cent and 89 per cent, respectively, while UPI and cash transactions declined by 96 per cent.

The survey also pointed to wider adoption of digital toll payments and smoother vehicle movement through fee plazas. NHAI said the results demonstrated the pass’s contribution to seamless toll collection, improved operational efficiency and a more convenient travel experience for frequent National Highway users.

The FASTag Annual Pass has crossed 10 mn passes issued since its launch on 15 August last year. It is valid at about 1,150 fee plazas on National Highways and expressways and removes the need for repeated recharges through a one-time payment of Rs. 3,075. The pass remains valid for one year or 200 toll plaza crossings and is available to non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag. It is activated on the existing tag after payment through the Rajmargyatra app.
