Kalamboli Junction Set for Major Upgrade

In a bid to eliminate traffic bottlenecks and improve connectivity, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) have jointly initiated the Kalamboli Junction Development Project. This high-impact project, estimated at Rs 48.2 billion (approximately $580 million), is scheduled for completion in 18 months.

Key Features of the Kalamboli Junction Upgrade The ambitious project involves constructing eight flyover arms and two underpasses to streamline traffic and improve access to critical routes. The flyovers will enhance movement for vehicles traveling from various directions, with arms designed for specific routes like Shil Phata to Steel Yard, Pune to Shil Phata, and Mumbai to JNPA.

The two underpasses will improve connectivity between Panvel and Shil Phata, as well as between Panvel and the Steel Yard, ensuring smoother traffic flow and less congestion.

Ongoing Construction and Traffic Adjustments Work has already begun on Phases 1, 2, 3, and 6, with continuous round-the-clock operation of three piling rigs to keep the project on track. However, due to construction work, the Panvel exit from Kalamboli is closed for six months, and traffic has been temporarily diverted through Palaspe and Atal Setu.

Authorities assure that the project, once completed, will significantly ease traffic congestion and improve the daily commute for thousands of people. Commuters are advised to plan their routes to avoid delays.

Strategic Infrastructure for Future Growth Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, had previously highlighted the strategic importance of upgrading Kalamboli Junction, which connects Mumbai to Pune and facilitates cargo movement to and from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). The upgraded junction will also provide seamless connectivity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The project will feature a two-level interchange with a directional/stack system, ensuring signal-free traffic flow and significantly reducing delays caused by cross-conflict at grade.
