Residents of Kbet Nongbri village in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district have gained access to a newly constructed 2-km internal road, addressing a long-standing demand for improved connectivity within the village. The project was inaugurated by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Saturday.

The road was built under a state government scheme at a cost of Rs. 26.3 mn. Syiem inaugurated the project by cutting a ribbon, marking the formal opening of the new internal route for residents and other local users.

A public meeting was held at the village football ground after the inauguration. The event also marked the commencement of a football tournament organised by the Kbet Sports Club, bringing together residents, local representatives and participants from nearby villages.

Those attending the programme included SDO PWD Ri-Bhoi D. Shylla, SDO PHE E. Lyngdoh, PWD Executive Engineer R. Warjri, Syiem of Raid Nongbri B. S. Syiem and Kbet Nongbri village headman R. Mawphniang. Local leaders, representatives of neighbouring villages and other invited guests were also present.

The programme featured cultural performances by village youth, including traditional dances and songs. During the gathering, Syiem asked residents to take proper care of the newly constructed road, noting that the local community would be among its primary users and beneficiaries. He also announced that the Education Department would take steps to construct a new building for Kbet Government Lower Primary School in the coming year.

Cement manufacturers in India are likely to raise prices by Rs. 10-15 per bag from mid-October, as they seek to offset persistent increases in power and fuel costs.
