KNR Constructions Accepts Fault in Malappuram Highway Collapse

KNR Constructions has taken responsibility for the recent partial collapse of a national highway under construction in Malappuram district, Kerala. Executive Director Jalandhar Reddy acknowledged the structural failure and confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway to determine its cause.

Speaking to the media, Reddy said the company had conducted all requisite technical and environmental studies prior to the project. “If expert review recommends a bridge at the site, we are fully prepared to construct one. We will adhere strictly to expert guidance,” he added, highlighting the firm’s four-decade track record in infrastructure and its use of advanced technologies and materials.

The acknowledgement follows the Union Government’s decision to debar KNR Constructions and its project consultant, Highway Engineering Consultant (HEC), after a section of National Highway 66 collapsed near Kooriyad on 19 May, damaging a service road and raising safety concerns.

In response, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) suspended Project Manager M. Amarnath Reddy and team leader Raj Kumar. The initial inquiry, conducted by Dr. Jimmy Thomas and Dr. Anil Dixit, led to these disciplinary measures.

A more detailed investigation, led by Professor G.V. Rao of IIT Delhi, is now in progress. The expert’s comprehensive report is expected to inform further action from the Centre.

In a wider step, MoRTH has directed a complete review of all ongoing national highway development works across Kerala to ensure quality and compliance with safety standards.
