The Indian Railways has unveiled the new Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical lift sea bridge, connecting Mandapam in mainland India to Pamban Island and Rameswaram. Built by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) at a cost of Rs.5.35 billion, the 2.05 km-long bridge is an engineering marvel featuring 100 spans of 18.3 m each and a unique 63 m navigational span. The bridge, designed with European and Indian codes by TYPSA, offers a navigational air clearance Pamban bridge: India's first vertical lift sea bridge completed of 22 m above sea level—3 m higher than the old bridge—enabling seamless passage for ships. Its electro-mechanical system interlocks with train controls, consuming less electricity, while a counterweight mechanism facilitates smooth operation. Capable of handling higher train speeds, the bridge boosts connectivity and tourism to Rameswaram, famed for the Ramanathaswamy Temple. A modern marvel, it is expected to attract global visitors for its innovative design and functionality.
