Rs 5 Billion Flyover Planned To Ease ISBT Traffic Chaos

Delhi commuters may soon get long-awaited relief from the chronic traffic congestion near the Kashmiri Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), as the government plans to construct a new flyover linking Nigambodh Ghat (near Margat Wale Baba) with Majnu Ka Tilla.
Officials said the project is part of an ambitious plan to transform the Rajghat–Majnu Ka Tilla corridor into a red-light-free stretch, drastically reducing travel time between central and north Delhi.
Traffic around ISBT is notoriously congested, with vehicles merging from five different directions, creating frequent bottlenecks. “The idea is to streamline vehicle flow and ease pressure on ISBT. The proposed flyover will pass over the existing terminal, cross the Metcalfe Road junction, and descend near Majnu Ka Tilla,” explained an official from the Public Works Department (PWD), as quoted by NDTV.
The plan is currently in the initial stages, with the PWD preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). Preliminary estimates suggest that construction could cost around Rs 5 billion and take two years to complete once work begins. Tenders for an earlier flyover proposal have been put on hold to prioritise this high-impact project.
The ISBT area handles thousands of vehicles daily, leading to severe congestion, particularly during the monsoon months, when road conditions deteriorate. If approved, the new flyover is expected to significantly cut delays, enhance traffic safety, and provide smoother connectivity across the national capital.
