Bengaluru to Share Elevated Corridor for Metro and Suburban Rail

Bengaluru is advancing a multilevel transport plan in which roads, Metro trains and suburban trains can use the same urban corridor at different levels. A 500 m alignment near Benniganahalli will be shared by Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) and Bengaluru Suburban Rail to avoid acquiring 1.3 acres of residential land.

The arrangement is intended to make more efficient use of Bengaluru’s limited space as the city expands. Existing double-decker flyovers in the city demonstrate how separate transport functions can be accommodated at different levels, while the shared rail alignment will reduce the need for separate infrastructure and additional property acquisition.

The suburban railway section involved is the Kanaka Line, being developed as part of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project. The line will connect Heelalige and Rajankunte and pass through Benniganahalli, where it will share a transport corridor with Bengaluru Metro’s Blue Line.

According to the project plan, the suburban railway will be built on an elevated level rather than on a separate alignment. This is expected to preserve residential property, reduce disruption caused by land acquisition and provide a connection between two public transport systems operating in the same area.

Benniganahalli will therefore serve as an important meeting point for the Metro and suburban railway networks. Their infrastructure will run at different levels within the common corridor, supporting a multimodal interchange where commuters can transfer between services and access connections towards Bengaluru and its surrounding areas. The shared arrangement also reflects the project’s focus on expanding transport capacity without requiring extensive additional land in a dense urban setting.
