CMRL Completes Final U-Girder Casting for Phase II Corridor 5

Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has completed the casting of all precast elements, including the final U-girder, for Phase II Corridor 5 between Ullagaram and Sholinganallur. The completion marks a major construction milestone for the elevated corridor and concludes the precasting work required for the package.

A total of 3,126 precast elements have been cast for the corridor. These comprise 1,041 I-girders, 892 U-girders, 871 pier arm segments, 303 pier caps and 19 portal shells. The U-girders form the largest individual category of elements produced for the package.

CMRL said the package recorded the highest U-girder production among the Phase II project packages, with 892 units cast. The precast operation used 98,052 cubic metres of concrete, 18,550 tonnes of reinforcement steel and 3,010 tonnes of high-tensile strands, indicating the scale of materials deployed for the corridor’s structural components.

The work was carried out through collaboration between CMRL, general consultant AEON Consortium and contractor HCC-KEC Consortium. With casting completed, construction activity will now focus on installing the remaining U-girders and building the entry and exit structures. CMRL said these activities are progressing towards the timely completion of the Chennai Metro Phase II project.

The Ullagaram-Sholinganallur section is part of Corridor 5 under Phase II. Completion of the precast element casting provides the project team with the full set of manufactured structural components listed for this package, while installation and associated structural works continue at the corridor site. The latest milestone was outlined in a CMRL press note updated on 14 October 2026.
