1. REDEVELOPMENT MOVES TO SITERLDA awarded the ₹462-crore EPC package to Ahluwalia Contracts (India) in November 2022, taking the Chandigarh station upgrade from planning to execution. Construction commenced on 11 January 2023, beginning a large-scale transformation of the operational rail hub while train services and passenger movement continued through the site. 2. BUILDING WITHOUT STOPPING THE RAILWAYRedeveloping Chandigarh meant working around active tracks, passengers and operating railway systems. Utilities had to be shifted, work fronts isolated and passenger routes altered in phases. This brownfield setting made construction sequencing critical, particularly where new structures, platform works and circulation infrastructure had to be introduced within a functioning station. 3. TWIN TERMINALS RISETwo new G+3 station buildings, one on the Chandigarh side and another on the Panchkula side, became the first major visible elements of the redevelopment. By December 2024, structural works on both buildings were complete, allowing construction to advance towards the concourse, foot overbridges, platforms and internal finishing works. 4. 72 METRES ACROSS THE TRACKSThe engineering centrepiece is the 72-m-wide central air concourse spanning the railway corridor. It connects the Chandigarh and Panchkula terminals, supplemented by two 12-m-wide foot overbridges. Above them, a 180-m-long through roof brings the elevated passenger zone under a continuous weather-protected cover. 5. FROM STRUCTURE TO PASSENGER SPACEOnce the principal structures were in place, work shifted to the station’s ground-level passenger interface. By February 2026, the parking area and bus stand were complete, while platform surfacing, shelters, approach roads and finishing works were progressing. All six platforms are being upgraded as part of the redevelopment. 6. THE OLD MAKES WAY FOR THE NEWBy August 2026, RLDA reported the project at about 90 per cent completion. Final works include through-roof sheeting and drainage, platform finishing and removal of the old foot overbridge. Passengers are already being routed through the new station buildings and central concourse as the redevelopment enters its closing phase.FACT FILEProject: Chandigarh Railway Station RedevelopmentExecuting Authority: Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA)EPC Contractor: Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Design Consultant: ANA Design Studio Authority Engineer / PMC: Voyants Solutions EPC Contract Value: ₹462 croreConstruction Start: 11 January 2023Key Features: Two G+3 station buildings, 72-m-wide air concourse, two 12-m-wide FOBs, 180-m-long through roof, six upgraded platformsStatus: About 90% complete as of August 2026All Photo Credits: ANA Design Studio

The Energy-Smart Buildings

Passive design is an integral part of energy-efficient architecture. Sophisticated building systems also contribute to this end. But what role do materials play in enhancing a building’s energy-efficiency?“Material selection is one of the earliest opportunities to influence how a building performs,” says Tejbeer Singh, Principal Architect & Founder, Expressionist by Tejbeer Singh. “The objective is not simply to select materials that look appropriate but to understand how they behave within the climate and construction system.”To read the full story Click Here ..
