L&T secures contracts worth Rs 7.70 bn for phase II of Chennai metro

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has chosen Larsen and Toubro to undertake two significant contracts worth nearly Rs 7.70 billion for the phase II project. These contracts involve the manufacturing and installation of essential overhead equipment, electrical systems, remote monitoring, and controlling systems required for the smooth operations of the upcoming phase II project.

The phase II project, spanning approximately 116 km across Chennai, encompasses three corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (corridor 4), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor 5). The project, with both elevated and underground sections, has commenced construction across various parts of the city at an estimated cost of Rs 618.43 billion. CMRL has been actively awarding contracts and initiating work for the supply of trains, signalling, telecom, electrical systems, and more, to support the project's development.

Larsen and Toubro have been awarded a contract worth Rs 5.33 billion for the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, and commissioning of receiving sub-stations (RSS), auxiliary sub- stations (ASS), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for portions of corridors 3 and 5. The focus of the electrical system design will be on providing a safe, reliable, and stable power supply to ensure uninterrupted service throughout these sections, as stated in a press release.

The first contract involves delivering a robust and dependable power supply for a segment of corridor 3, from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur, as well as a small stretch from Madhavaram Milk Colony to CMBT on corridor 5. Additionally, Larsen and Toubro have secured the second contract, valued at INR 239.41 crore, for the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, and commissioning of overhead equipment for the same sections of the phase II project.
