MC Orders Completion Of Sadhu Vaswani Railway Overpass By Dec 2026

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram directed civic officials to complete the Sadhu Vaswani railway overpass by December 2026 after a site inspection. He instructed the project department to expedite work while ensuring close coordination with railway authorities and the traffic police. Ram set a requirement for monthly site inspections to review progress and to ensure adherence to technical standards and safety protocols during the remaining construction.

The project requires launching a 54-metre open web girder across a busy railway section that carries more than 240 trains each day, creating significant technical and operational challenges. Work under the project began in June 2024 but actual construction started nearly a year later owing to delays in obtaining clearances and resolving engineering issues. The PMC reported that approximately 75 per cent of the overall work has been completed and remaining tasks will be accelerated.

Delays stemmed from the need to relocate an existing overhead water pipeline with a diameter of one metre, complete underground laying, secure permissions from the railway ministry and revise parts of the project plan. These issues have been addressed, the project department said, and a new contractor has been appointed to remove the remaining overhead truss at the span, work that is expected to finish within a week. Once the truss is removed, the launch of the girder is slated for the end of September.

Commuters and local residents have reported persistent congestion on Bund Garden Road and at Wadia College Chowk, and civic officials acknowledged the project is a crucial link for the area. The PMC said it will coordinate traffic diversions with the police to reduce disruption while simultaneously commencing work on the remaining three spans after the main railway span is launched. The municipal commissioner directed officials to maintain pace and to ensure that final construction meets safety and durability standards before opening the overpass to traffic.
