Mumbai Metro Line 13 Approved With Four Point Nine Two Km Bridge

The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee has approved the Rs177,249.9 million (Rs177,249.9 mn) Metro Line 13 project, creating a 25.03 km corridor to link Mira Road, Vasai, Naigaon, Nalasopara and Virar. The approval is expected to strengthen connectivity in Mumbai's western suburbs and offer a faster alternative to road travel for large numbers of commuters. The planned alignment includes 16 stations and a significant Metro facility across Vasai Creek.

Line 13 will comprise 13 elevated stations and three underground stations, with approximately 21.78 km on elevated viaducts and three point two five km underground. The corridor will provide interchange connectivity with the suburban railway at Naigaon, Nalasopara and Virar, and a proposed connection with Metro Line 9 at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium is included in planning. A depot is proposed at Chikhal Dongri to support operations and maintenance.

The most prominent structural element is a four point nine two km integrated metro-cum-road bridge across Vasai Creek, designed as a six-lane facility to carry both Metro and road traffic. This alignment is intended to create a direct link between Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar and to remove an existing road detour of about 32 km for some journeys. The bridge will form a key element of the corridor and is expected to alter travel patterns in the area.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to cut travel time by around 50 per cent compared with road journeys and to expand options for last-mile connectivity with bus links at all stations. Planners anticipate reduced reliance on private vehicles, eased congestion on major roads and lower transport-related carbon emissions. With an investment of Rs177,249.9 million (Rs177,249.9 mn) and 16 stations, Line 13 aims to reshape mobility between Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar.
