Mumbai Metro Line 3 Nears Launch In South Mumbai

History is about to be made in Mumbai, as the long-awaited Metro Line 3 — the city’s first fully underground corridor — prepares to begin operations in South Mumbai. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has unveiled first-look images of several stations that will soon redefine daily commuting across the city’s southern precincts. While the official inauguration date has not yet been confirmed, sources suggest the launch may take place around 8 or 9 October, following successful trial runs.
On 28 September, MMRC shared images of the Hutatma Chowk Metro Station, describing it as the “Gateway to South Mumbai’s Icons.” Located in the historic Fort area, the station will offer seamless connectivity to prominent landmarks such as the Bombay High Court, Reserve Bank of India, BSE, Gymkhanas, Flora Fountain, and several cultural and educational institutions. The post read: “From heritage landmarks to financial hubs, cultural hotspots to stadiums – this station connects you to it all!”
A day earlier, on 27 September, MMRC revealed visuals of Churchgate Metro Station, calling it “the heart of South Mumbai.” The station will link commuters to Marine Drive, Nariman Point, Mantralaya, Wankhede Stadium, Oval Maidan, NCPA, Mumbai University, and the Gateway of India, providing convenient access to the city’s most iconic destinations.
On 26 September, the corporation showcased Vidhan Bhavan Metro Station, which will offer direct underground access to the state legislature, Mantralaya, and the New Administrative Building. Designed with multiple entry and exit points, the station aims to ease congestion for both government employees and the public.
The following day, 25 September, MMRC released images of the Cuffe Parade Metro Station, which will serve as the southern terminal of the Aqua Line (Metro Line 3), marking the final stop on the route.
Public excitement has surged on social media following the station reveals, with many users eagerly asking, “When is it starting?” and “How long until the ribbon-cutting?” One user, Nikhil Jain, tagged @MumbaiMetro3 asking for the opening date but had received no response as of Sunday.
Once operational, the Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ Aqua Line will significantly reduce road congestion, cut travel times, and enhance east–west connectivity across the city. Transport experts have hailed the development as a major milestone in Mumbai’s urban mobility, particularly for South Mumbai, long regarded as the city’s cultural, financial, and political hub.
