North East Frontier Railway to install LED lights for railway coaches

In its quest to improve the lighting – from the conventional installations – in the railway coaches, North East Frontier Railway has reportedly laid down plans to replace existing incandescent lamps and CFL lights inside the coaches with LED lights.

As per a statement reported, the initiative will help Indian Railways to cut on its energy bill and the inside of the coaches will also get brightly illuminated. Reports also indicate that retrofitting with LED lights for all coaches will be done within the next one year and a total of 1,890 passenger coaches have already been retrofitted.

Several factors result in poor lighting, one of which is accumulation of dust particles. Also, the recent statement has reportedly mentioned that the existing tube lights have limitations in brightness and there is uneven distribution of light. And, LED lights are one of the best ways to overcome this limitation. These are brighter, energy-efficient and can be conveniently used in 100 volts. This plus one of the biggest benefits of LED lights is that it results into DC energy savings of possibly up to 40 per cent.

Through this initiative, the Indian Railways looks forward to improving the travelling experience of the passengers along with improving the interiors of the coaches, which will additionally ensure comfort.

Towards achieving a sustainable infrastructure for the Railways sector, North Frontier Railway has already replaced conventional lighting in all its stations with LED lights. Even more, the Lux levels of lights have been improved to airport standard lighting at important stations such as Guwahati, Dibrugarh, New Cooch Behar, New Jalpaiguri, Kathihar and Rangiya.

Undoubtedly, looks like the Indian Railways is on the right track in terms of ensuring energy-efficient practices and sustainable infrastructure with long term gains.
