The new Ernakulam Town railway station will be a green structure

The Ernakulam Town railway station will be a green building, in accordance with Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), and will provide travellers with sophisticated infrastructure and amenities akin to those found at an airport. According to the railway spokeswoman, Ernakulam Town Railway Station, also known as Ernakulam North Station is one of the busiest railway junction stations in South India. "Southern Railway has taken up the reconstruction of this station to provide travellers with cutting-edge infrastructure and amenities akin to those seen in airports. The contract for the reconstruction work was given in August 2022, and now that preparatory work has started, it is moving along steadily”, said the spokeswoman.

More than 90 scheduled train services are handled daily at the Ernakulam Town railway station. According to him, the station is classified as a "NSG-3" station and sees 1.02 crore passengers annually, or 28,000 passengers per day on average. The Kottayam district is traversed by the Ernakulam Town to Kayankulam railway line, which has significant stations at Kottayam, Tiruvalla, Chengannur, and Mavelikkara. “On August 29, 2022, Rank Projects and Development Pvt Ltd received an EPC contract for the construction of redeveloping the Ernakulam Town railway station for a sum of INR 1.50 billion. The project will be finished in 36 months”, according to the spokeswoman.

"It is also intended to build a multi-level auto garage, a new foot over bridge, and an air concourse with skywalk connectivity. It has been suggested to replace the current building at the West Terminal with a three-story structure with a mezzanine floor and a build-up area of 14,506 sq. mtr. The ground level will offer top-notch passenger services, including restrooms, cloakrooms, baby care areas, feeding rooms, assistance desks, retail establishments, and kiosks, to enable hassle-free passenger movement, according to the spokesperson. Passenger waiting areas with amenities including restaurants, shops, and restrooms will be on the first floor. The air concourse, which has recently installed escalators and lifts for the comfort of the travellers, is the major feature of the floor.
