Trichy Container Handling Approved for Rail Freight

Southern Railway has approved lift-on, lift-off container handling at Trichy’s Group I goods shed, with the permission taking effect on 9 October 2026. The arrangement allows containers to be transferred between road vehicles and railway wagons, creating an additional rail freight option for central Tamil Nadu.

The approval is an operational clearance and does not announce a dedicated container train route, service frequency or initial cargo commitment. Lift-on, lift-off handling allows the same container to move between trucks and trains without unloading its contents, potentially combining road access at either end with rail transport over the intermediate distance.

The commercial viability of the service will depend on the entire movement, including trucking to the yard, handling equipment, train availability, transit times and final delivery arrangements. Logistics providers will need to assess customer demand and aggregate cargo, while regular volumes and workable schedules will be important for developing dependable services.

The Tiruchchirappalli railway division provides an established freight base for the initiative. It loaded 13.24 mn tonnes during 2025–26, crossing the 13-million-tonne mark for the fourth consecutive year and ranking first among Southern Railway’s divisions. Between April and July 2026, it handled approximately 4 mn tonnes and recorded goods revenue of Rs. 2.25 bn. These figures cover the division’s overall freight business and do not represent container traffic at Trichy goods yard. A container terminal commissioned at Peralam goods shed is a separate facility.

The approval coincides with planning for a proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Hub in Tiruchirappalli district. Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation issued a request for proposals on 8 October for a consultant to prepare a feasibility report and examine project-structuring options. The study will consider a site of at least 30 acres, cargo demand, connectivity, stakeholder requirements and economic viability, with feeder collection and consolidation centres proposed for Villupuram, Salem and Madurai. The assignment is scheduled to conclude within 28 weeks of contract signing, excluding review time, while final site selection remains pending.
